What are Invisalign Braces?

Invisalign is an effective teeth straightening solution that combines great results with improved comfort, convenience and discretion. Invisalign consists of a series of clear aligners that are replaced for a new set every 4-8 weeks. Every set is slightly tighter than the previous one, thereby gently pushing your teeth into the desired position. In just a few months, you will start to see a straighter and more healthy smile!

Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign vs Braces

Both Invisalign and traditional braces are designed to improve the alignment of your teeth and jaw to improve oral health and create a straighter, healthier smile. Even though the destination is the same, there are some differences between braces and Invisalign that set them apart from one another.

Visibility

Even though braces are no longer as bulky as they used to be, the metal brackets and wire are more noticeable than Invisalign aligners, which are completely clear and invisible. Some patients prefer braces but like the subtlety of Invisalign, in that case you can opt for ceramic, tooth coloured braces which are less visible than metal braces.

Effectiveness

Although both braces and Invisalign are highly effective orthodontic treatments for most cases, braces tend to be slightly preferable for severe and complex orthodontic cases that require more adjustments and closer monitoring.

Convenience

Invisalign braces are removable which makes them more convenient for eating, brushing and flossing. However, braces are convenient in their own way. Since they can’t be removed, the wearer does not have the responsibility to ensure that they are wearing them long enough to achieve desired results, as is the case with Invisalign.

Wear Time

Braces can not be removed and must be worn all the time for the duration of the treatment. Invisalign aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours a day, leaving just enough time to eat, drink warm drinks, brush or floss.

Restrictions

When wearing braces, you are restricted from eating certain hard or sticky foods such as popcorn, apples, and taffy. With Invisalign aligners, you won’t have any food restrictions while in treatment, however you have to remove your aligners for every meal and drink so as not to break or stain your aligners.

Treatment Time

The average treatment time for Invisalign is only between 6 and 18 months, while for braces the average is around 2 years. However, for more minor cases, straight teeth can be achieved in as little as 6 months with traditional braces.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign treatments use clear aligners that are custom made from digital impressions of your teeth. These impressions are used by a computer to create a series of clear aligners that slowly push your teeth into the desired position over several months.

The aligners are changed to the next set every 2 weeks until your treatment is complete. Invisalign must be worn for at least 22 hours a day, leaving you with just enough time to eat, brush and floss.
